Consumer Safety Technology Act

What this does

The bill orders three federal technology studies and one pilot, and grants no new regulatory power. It directs the Consumer Product Safety Commission to stand up a pilot program within one year to test artificial intelligence for at least one consumer-safety task, such as tracking injury trends, identifying product hazards, monitoring the marketplace for recalled goods, or flagging imports that must be refused entry. It directs the Secretary of Commerce, consulting the Federal Trade Commission and taking public comment, to complete a study within one year on using blockchain to protect consumers from fraud. It directs the Federal Trade Commission to report within one year on its enforcement actions relating to tokens and its recommendations for further legislation. Every provision ends in a study, a pilot, or a report to Congress. The bill creates no enforcement power, no penalties, and no rulemaking authority.
