American Battlefield Protection Program Amendments Act of 2026

What this does

This bill changes the National Park Service grant programs that fund battlefield preservation and adds a new study mandate. Congress extends the authorization for the battlefield acquisition grant program from 2028 to 2036. Congress authorizes $2,000,000 for each fiscal year through fiscal year 2036 for the battlefield interpretation and restoration grants under sections 308104 and 308105. The bill strikes subsection (d) of section 308104 and subsection (e) of section 308105 of title 54. The bill also directs the Secretary of the Interior, acting through the National Park Service, to prepare or certify studies of sites tied to the French and Indian War of 1754 to 1763 and the Mexican-American War of 1846 to 1848. Those studies must identify sites, assess threats to them, and provide preservation alternatives, including possible designation as units of the National Park System. The Secretary must submit the studies to the House Natural Resources Committee and the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee.
