Setting Consumer Standards for Lithium-Ion Batteries Act

What this does

This bill orders the Consumer Product Safety Commission to turn three industry battery-safety standards into binding federal rules. Within 180 days of enactment, the Commission must adopt UL 2271, UL 2849, and UL 2272 as mandatory consumer product safety standards. Those standards cover the lithium-ion batteries and electrical systems in e-bikes, light electric vehicles, and personal e-mobility devices. The rules apply only to consumer products. When the standards-writing organization revises a standard later, the revision automatically becomes federal law 180 days after notice, unless the Commission rules within 90 days that the change does not improve safety. Within five years, the Commission must report to Congress on fires, explosions, and other hazards from these batteries.
